The Speckled Band chapter of the BSI was founded by James Keddie, Sr. in Boston, Massachusetts in 1940, and was one of the oldest Sherlock Holmes societies in the United States. From its founding, the organization upheld a number of distinctive customs, including annual dinners, ceremonial offices, and invitation only membership. The Speckled Band also irregularly published a collection of Sherlockian writings, starting with The Second Cab in 1947.
