Historical Note

The Jesuit Institute was founded at Boston College in 1988 through an endowment from the Jesuit Community to promote research and dialogue on faith and culture. Its mission is to foster interdisciplinary inquiry that advances the University’s Jesuit, Catholic character.

Robert Daly, SJ, served as the first director (1989–1991). Michael Buckley, SJ, directed the Institute from 1992 to 2001 and became the inaugural holder of the Canisius Chair, under which the Institute hosted the international conference The Jesuits: Culture, Learning, and the Arts, 1540–1773. T. Frank Kennedy, SJ, was director from 2002 to 2014.

James Keenan, SJ, assumed leadership in 2014 as the fourth director and third holder of the Canisius Chair. Under his direction, the Institute continues to sponsor faculty research, interdisciplinary seminars, visiting scholars, and international conferences.

Abstract

This collection documents the professional and personal life of John E. Murphy, SJ, a twentieth-century Jesuit and professor of Irish Literature at Boston College. The bulk of the papers consists of religious materials and subject files used for his research and lectures. Of note are a small collection of Irish fine print press cards from Dun Emer and Cuala Press.
