Boston College. Office of Global Education
Biography
By the 1970s, the Junior Year Abroad Program had become increasingly popular with students through the integration of international education into the Boston College Curriculum. To meet the growing demand for an international program, President Monan, S.J. created the President's Committee on International Education in 1985.
As a result of this work, in 1991 the Office of International Programs was established. The office worked with various schools and departments of Boston College to promote study and research opportunities for faculty, staff, and students. Locations and opportunities were determined by existing strengths (Jesuit networks, Sister Cities, and faculty and alumni contacts) and by changing global conditions. This was a change from the Foreign Study Program which emphasized foreign language competency.
The office published a newsletter, International, on international activities at Boston College, and it regularly published a list of faculty areas of interest and contacts, and sponsors. The office also included an advisory council composed of faculty members.
In 1997, the Foreign Study Program and the Office of International Programs merged to form the Center for International Programs and Partnerships. In 2007, the program was once again renamed the Office of International Programs. In 2020, the program was renamed the Office of Global Education.
