Historical Note

Established in 1894, the Boston Elevated Railway Company (BERy) was a private company which operated railway lines serving suburban and downtown Boston. The company was absorbed by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) in 1947. In 1964 the MTA was succeeded by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).
