Biographical Note

John E. Murphy, born in Newton, Massachusetts, to Irish-born parents, was ordained (1934), earned an STL degree at Weston College (1935), studied in Wales and Ireland (1935-1939), and earned his PhD in Irish Studies from the National University of Ireland. He taught at Boston College (1939 to 1970) and was appointed to the position of Business Manager (1958). Following his retirement in 1970, Murphy taught as a Visiting Lecturer at Boston State College (1970-1974). He resided at St. Mary's Jesuit Community at Boston College until his death in 1985.

Abstract

This collection documents the professional and personal life of John E. Murphy, SJ, a twentieth-century Jesuit and professor of Irish Literature at Boston College. The bulk of the papers consists of religious materials and subject files used for his research and lectures. Of note are a small collection of Irish fine print press cards from Dun Emer and Cuala Press.
