Biographical note
A Romano-Briton by origin, at the age of sixteen he was taken captive to Ireland. He escaped after six years. He then pursued his education in continental monasteries. About the year 432, after having been consecrated bishop by Saint Germanus at Auxerre, he returned to Ireland as a missionary, where he broadly established the Catholic Church: he travelled throughout the country preaching, teaching, building churches, opening schools and monasteries, converting leaders and bards, and everywhere supporting his preaching with miracles. He brought the first episcopal hierarchy to the Irish Church, with the primatial see at Armagh (established approximately 444).
