Biographical note

Poet, translator, publisher, and Irish civil servant Thomas Kinsella was born in 1928 in Dublin. Kinsella initially worked in several posts in the Irish Civil Service and then was poet-in-residence at Southern Illinois University from 1965 to 1967. In 1967, he became a Professor of English at Temple University. Kinsella published more than 30 volumes of poetry, including Another September (1958), for which he won the Guinness Poetry Award. He also wrote critical works and translated four volumes of poetry from Gaelic, notably The Táin (1969), in collaboration with the artist Louis le Brocquy. Kinsella died in 2021.
