Biography
William Henry O'Connell (December 8, 1859 – April 22, 1944) was an American cardinal of the Catholic Church. He graduated from Boston College in 1881 and was ordained a priest in 1884. He served as a parish priest (1884-1895), Rector of the North American College in Rome (1895-1901), Bishop of Portland, Maine (1901-1906), Papal Envoy to the Emperor of Japan (1905-1906), and, finally, Archbishop of Boston (1907-1944). He was made a cardinal in 1911.
