Biographical note
John Joseph Wright was born on July 18, 1909, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, to John and Harriet Cokely Wright. He attended Boston Latin School, and graduated from Boston College in 1931. He attended St. John's Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts, Pontifical North American College, and Pontifical Gregorian University, earning his Doctorate of Sacred Theology in 1939. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1935. In 1948, Wright was consecrated bishop of Boston, moving to the bishopric of Worcester in 1950, and then Pittsburgh in 1959. He attended the Second Vatican Council in this position. He was raised to Cardinal in 1969. Wright died from polymyositis in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on August 10, 1979.
