Biographical Note

Florence Burke was born in 1828 in County Cork, Ireland. He immigrated to the United States, along with his brother John, in 1848 to escape the Great Famine. Burke eventually moved to West Springfield, Massachusetts and became a tenant farmer. He married Ellen Daly and together they had three children. On January 5, 1864, Burke enlisted to serve with the 37th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He was killed in action on June 18, 1864 at the Second Battle of Petersburg.

Abstract

This collection contains letters between Florence Burke, a Union soldier during the American Civil War, and his wife Ellen. There is also a letter from Charles Brown and Joseph Bell Alexander to Ellen concerning the exhumation of her husband's body from the battlefield. Additionally, there are tintypes and a copy of a land purchase deed.
