Biographical Note

Nurse and Boston College faculty member. Mary Rita Petkauskas was born in 1917 in Shirley, MA, to Peter J. and Mary Belshunas Petkauskas. She earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Boston College (1953) and a master's degree from Columbia University. She focused on public health and maternity nursing, working in a variety of clinical settings and teaching at Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts Memorial Hospital (now part of Boston University), and Boston College. At Boston College, she was hired to implement a new master's program in maternal and child health. After her retirement in 1980, she shifted her attention to elder care and was appointed to the board of the Council on Aging in Berlin, MA, where she expanded and solidified public healthcare initiatives for seniors in the area. Petkauskas died on April 27, 2005.

Contains an autobiography, certificates and albums of photographs and ephemera. Much of the material relates to Petkauskas's work as a professor in the Boston College Graduate School of Nursing and the School's Maternal and Child Health Program.
