Bernice M. (Lemire) Clay was born around 1925 to Joseph and Marie Lemire. She received two degrees in English from Boston College: in 1960 from the Woods College of Advancing Studies and in 1963 from the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences. In 1969, she married William Clay, in Lowell, MA.
