Biographical note
American author. Robert Kanigel was born on May 28, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York. He earned an engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1966). He worked as an engineer until 1969 when he became a writer. He wrote freelance from San Francisco (1971-1974) and Baltimore (1974-1999). He published his first book in 1986, and then transitioned to writing long-form essays and monographs. In 1999, he accepted a position as professor of science writing at MIT, where he helped start its Graduate Program in Science Writing, a program he directed for seven years. In 2011, Kanigel retired from MIT to write full-time and moved back to Baltimore with his wife, Sarah.
