Biographical Note

Charles Sumner (1811-1874) was a United States Senator from Massachusetts especially known for his strong abolitionist stances, for which he was once beaten on the Senate floor. He also served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1861-1871), where he opposed United States imperialist expansion following the Civil War.
