Biographical note
Henry Matthias Brock was born in Boston in 1876. Brock attended Boston College High School before attending Boston College, where he graduated in 1897. He then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), graduating in 1900. On joining the Society of Jesus, he studied at Woodstock College and in Hastings, England and was ordained in 1912. On his return to the United States, Brock taught physics, geology, astronomy and German at College of the Holy Cross. During this time he contributed articles for ten of the fifteen volumes of the Catholic Encyclopedia. In 1928, Brock became the first director of the Weston Observatory at Boston College. Boston College honored him with the degree of Doctor of Science in 1960. Brock died on September 8, 1966.
