Biographical Note

Peter Hebblethwaite was born in Manchester in 1930, graduated from Oxford in 1958, and was ordained a priest in the Society of Jesus in 1963. He edited the Jesuit magazine The month from 1965 to 1974. He left the Jesuit order in 1973 but continued to write for journals and newspapers such as the Tablet and the National Catholic reporter on Vatican affaies and the Catholic Church. Hebblethwaite was the author of numerous books including two well-received biographies: John XXIII: Pope of the council (1984) and Pope Paul VI: the first modern Pope (1992). Hebblethwaite died in 1994.
