Biographical note

George Andrew Bacon was born in Webster, Massachusetts on January 17, 1847. He attended Brown University and graduated in 1867. He worked as a teacher and principal in many schools prior to publishing, including Derby Academy in Vermont, Gardner High School in Massachusetts, the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and Syracuse High School in New York. Bacon was also the publisher of the magazine "The Academy," a journal of secondary education. In 1888 Bacon entered into a partnership with John Allyn, and established the publishing company Allyn and Bacon. George A. Bacon died on January 14, 1930.
