Biographical note
Maire Comerford was born in 1893 in County Wicklow, Ireland. After the Easter Rising in 1916, Comerford joined Cumann na mBan and campaigned for Sinn Féin. She carried dispatches for the IRA during the bombardment of the Four Courts in Dublin in 1922, was arrested multiple times, and participated in hunger strikes before her release in 1923. In 1935, she began her journalist career at The Irish Press, a position she held until her retirement in 1964. In 1969, she published The First Dáil, documenting the inaugural meeting of the revolutionary parliament. Comerford remained politically active through her involvement with the Anti-Partition League and campaigning for political prisoners until her death in 1982.
