Biographical note
Born in the castle of Castiglione in Lombardy, Gonzaga served as a page at the courts of Tuscany, Mantua, and Spain, and in his eighteenth year entered the Society of Jesus. Within six years he fell sick while nursing the plague-stricken and died. He was beatified in 1605 and canonized in 1726. Pope Benedict XIII declared him special protector of young students and Pope Pius XI proclaimed him patron of Christian youth.
