Liguori, Alphonsus Maria de, Saint (1696 September 27-1787 August 1)
Dates
- Existence: 1696 September 27 - 1787 August 1
Biographical note
Born near Naples, Liguori became a barrister, but soon abandoned this career and became a priest in 1726. He joined a society of priests engaged in catechizing the peasants of the country districts, and this led him to the foundation of the congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, which was approved in 1749. In 1762, an order of the pope forced Liguori to accept the bishopric of Sant'agata de' Goti, which he held until 1775, when he was compelled to resign due to ill-health. He returned to live with the members of his own congregation. Throughout all these years he produced a steady output of ascetical, theological, and historical works. Canonized in 1839, and declared Doctor of the Church in 1871.
