Biographical note
Born Alfred Bessette in Mont-Saint-Grégoire, Quebec, to Isaac and Clothilde Foisy Bessette. He joined the Congregation of Holy Cross in Montreal in 1872 and received the religious name of Brother André. He primarily ministered to the sick while working as a porter at Collège Notre-Dame in Côte-des-Neiges, Quebec, and is credited with thousands of healings associated with his pious devotion to Saint Joseph. Bessette was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, making him the first Canadian living after Confederation to be canonized.
