Andrew, Apostle, Saint
Biographical note
A native of Bethsaida in Galilee, elder brother of Peter and like him a fisherman. Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist and the first to be called by Jesus. He is said to have evangelized Asia Minor and Greece and to have been crucified at Patras in Achaia. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, Russia, and Greece. His emblem in art is the traditional cross of his martyrdom, shaped like an X.
