Biographical note
One of the Twelve Apostles, Bartholomew is usually identified with Nathanael. He is said to have preached in Asia Minor, northwest India and Greater Armenia, and to have been flayed alive. His relics are enshrined in Rome on the island of the Tiber named after him, Isola di San Bartolomeo.
