Blaise, Saint, -approximately 316
Person
Biographical note
Blaise was a physician who became bishop of Sebaste in Armenia, where he was martyred. One of his miracles was the saving of the life of a boy who had half swallowed a fish-bone which could not be extricated; hence the rite of the Blessing of St. Blaise against affections of the throat.
(paraphrased from The Book of Saints : A Dictionary of Persons Canonized or Beatified by the Catholic Church. 5th edition. New York: Crowell, 1966.)
