Brigid, of Ireland, Saint, approximately 453-approximately 524
Person
Biographical note
Born at Faughart, near Dundalk, she founded the nunnery of Kildare, the first to be established in Ireland. In art she is represented holding a cross, with a flame over her head, and sometimes with a cow near her, since she is reputed to be the protectress of those engaged in diary work. She is the patron of Ireland after Saint Patrick.
