Biographical note

A native of the Abruzzi in central Italy, who after some years of soldiering, tried to join the Capuchins, but had to leave them on account of a disease of the feet, which proved incurable. Ultimately he found his vocation in the service of the sick, for whom he founded the nursing congregation of the Ministers of the Sick, approved in 1591. Canonized in 1746, and declared by Leo XIII patron saint of the sick and of their nurses.
