Biographical note

Son of Count Gilbert Borromeo by a Medici mother, born in 1538. His uncle Pope Pius IV appointed him archbishop of Milan and cardinal when he was aged only twenty-two. He did not receive priestly or episcopal orders until the year 1563. He died in 1584, and was canonized in 1610.
