Dominic, Saint, 1170-1221
Dates
- Existence: 1170 August 8 - 1221 August 6
Biographical note
A native of Caleruega, province of Burgos, in Old Castile, and an Augustinian canon regular at the cathedral of Osma. In 1203 he accompanied his bishop, Diego de Azevedo, to southern France (Languedoc), where the Roman Church was in conflict with the Albigenses. In 1206, Dominic opened a convent at Prouille for nun-converts from Albigensianism. This was the germ of his order of friars known as the Friars Preachers, whom Dominic sent everywhere to preach and teach. The order was approved in 1216, and within a few years it had spread throughout Europe. Dominic died at Bologna in 1221, and was canonized in 1234.
