Galgani, Gemma, Saint, 1878-1903
Dates
- Existence: 1878 March 12 - 1903 April 11
Biographical note
Born at Camigliano, near Lucca, in Tuscany, in 1878. Her mother died when she was seven years old, and from that time her life was one of domestic trials and intense suffering both spiritual and physical. Through it all, however, she remained at peace and was the subject of various extraordinary supernatural phenomena, including visions, ecstasies, revelations, supernatural knowledge, visible encounters with her guardian angel, prophecy, miracles, and periodically recurring stigmata between 1899 and 1901. She was directed by the Passionist fathers, though her physical infirmities prevented her becoming a Passionist nun, as she ardently desired. She died on Holy Saturday, 1902. She was beatified in 1933 and canonized in 1940.
