Germaine Cousin, Saint, 1579-1601
Biographical note
Born in Pibrac, a village in France near Toulouse, in 1579. She was born with a limb difference in one hand and scrofula. Her mother died whilee she was an infant, and her stepmother kept her isolated and working as a shepherd. She turned to Christianity for comfort, bringing her flocks to hear Mass every day and having a particular devotion to Mary. She died in 1601, and was canonized in 1867. She is represented in art with a shepherd's crook or with a distaff; with a watchdog, or a sheep; or with flowers in her apron. She is the patron of abandoned people and disabled people.
