Biographical note

Jane Frances Frémiot was born at Dijon, in Burgundy, in 1572, and in 1592 married the Baron de Chantal. They spent together eight years and had four children; then the Baron died as the result of a hunting accident. Jane found her spiritual father and friend in Saint Francis de Sales, under whose guidance she founded the new Order of the Visitation, chiefly for widows and ladies who could not stand the austerities of the older orders. Sixty-six convents were established during her lifetime. She died at Moulinsin 1641, but her remains rest at Anneçy in Savoy.
