Dates
- Existence: approximately 1579 - 1615 March 10
Biographical note
Born at Drum-na-Keith, Banffshire, Scotland, and brought up a Calvinist, he was received into the Catholic Church at Louvain (1596) at the age of seventeen. He joined the Society of Jesus (1599) and worked in Austria and in France until 1613. He then returned to Scotland, where he was beginning to make converts when he was betrayed and imprisoned. For eight days and nights on end he was forcibly kept from sleep so that he should reveal the names of other Catholics. The attempt was unsuccessful, and he was hanged at Glasgow in 1615. Beatified in 1929 and canonized in 1976.
