John XXIII, Pope, 1881-1963
Dates
- Existence: 1881 November 25 - 1963 June 3
Biographical note
Pope John XXIII was born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli on November 25, 1881 in Sotto il Monte, Bergamo, Lombardy, to Marianna Mazzola and Giovanni Battista Roncalli. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1904 and served a number of posts in France, Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. He was raised to cardinal in 1953, and elected pope on October 28, 1958. He called the Second Vatican Council in 1962, though he did not live to see its completion, dying on June 3, 1963 of stomach cancer. He was declared a saint in 2013 by Pope Francis based on his virtuous, model lifestyle, and because of the good which had come from his opening of the Second Vatican Council, bypassing the traditionally required second miracle. He was canonized in 2014.
