Biographical note

Marie Rose Julia Billiart was born at Cuvilly in Picardy,in 1751. At the age of fourteen, she took a vow of chastity and gave herself up to the service and instruction of the poor. Soon her health completely broke down, but she was miraculously cured in 1804. During the French Revolution (1794-1804) pious friends gathered round her couch; thus developed the Institute of Notre Dame, for the Christian education of girls, which was definitely established at Amiens in 1804. Beatified in 1906, canonized in 1969.
