Biographical note

Junípero Serra was born in Petra, Majorca, Spain in 1913. In 1730, Serra entered the Franciscan Order at Palma, and in 1737 he was ordained a Catholic priest. He received a doctorate in theology from the Lullian College in Palma de Majorca, and taught philosophy until he became a missionary in the Americas in 1748. He is credited with founding the five Franciscan Missions of the Sierra Gorda, in what is now Mexico, and eight missions in what is currently the state of California in the United States. Serra was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 25 September 1988 in Vatican City, and canonized by Pope Francis on 23 September 2015 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Serra's canonization was contentious, as he was accused of mandatory conversions and abuse of Native American peoples.
