Biography
Laura of Saint Catherine of Siena Montoya was born in Jerico, Colombia in 1874. Montoya was trained as a teacher at Escuela de Espíritu Santo in Amalfi and Normale de Institutoras in Medellin, graduating in 1893. In 1908, she began working with indiginous communities in the Uraba and Sarare regions, and in 1914 she founded the Congregation of Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and Saint Catherine of Siena. She was wheelchair-bound due to illness for the last nine years of her life and died in 1949. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in Saint Peter's Square on 7 July 2003, and canonized by Pope Francis on 12 May 2013.
