Dates

  • Existence: 1647 July 22 - 1690 October 17

Biographical note

Born at L'Hautecourt in Burgundy in 1647. In 1671, she joined the Order of the Visitation at Paray-le-Monial. Her primary work, the spreading of public and liturgical devotion to the Sacred Heart, began in earnest in 1675. After violent opposition, chiefly by theologians in the tradition of Cornelius Jansen (Jansenists), the devotion became extremely popular in the Catholic Church. Margaret was canonized in 1920.
