Dates
- Existence: 1514 August 24 - 1577 May 28
Biographical note
Maria Bagnesi was born in Florence on Augsut 15, 1514 to Carlo Bagnesi and Alessandra Orlandini. She was raised primarily by one of her sisters, a nun with the Order of Preachers. When she turned seventeen, she heard that her father had arranged a marriage for her, and she fell so ill she could not walk and was thus confined to her bed. She became a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic in 1544 and made her profession in 1545 from her bed. She developed a deep devotion to Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, assuming the religious name Maria Bartholomea, and many visited her bedside to hear her wisdom. Her room also became a sanctuary for cats and songbirds. Bagnesi died in Florence in 1577, and was beatified in 1804.
