Biographical note

Maria Bernarda Bütler was born Verena Bütler on May 28, 1848 in Switzerland, the fourth of eight children to Henry and Catherine Bütler. She joined the Franciscan Capuchin nuns at the convent of Mary Help of Sinners in Altstätten in 1867, and took the religious name María Bernarda of the Heart of Mary. At the invitation of Pedro Schumacher, the Bishop of Portoviejo, Bütler left for the missions in Ecuador in 1888 with six others. There, she founded a religious congregation, the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Sinners. In 1895, she and her fellow religious left Ecuador for Colombia due to anti-religious sentiment. She died in Cartagena, Colombia, in 1924, and was canonized in 2008.
