Martha, Saint

 Person

Biographical note

Sister of Lazarus and of Mary of Bethany (identified in the West with Mary Magdalene). She was the hostess of Jesus in their house at Bethany who was "careful and troubled about many things" (Luke 10:41). For this reason she has become the type of the active life, in contrast to her sister Mary, the type of the spiritual life.

(paraphrased from The Book of Saints : A Dictionary of Persons Canonized or Beatified by the Catholic Church. 5th edition. New York: Crowell, 1966.)
