Mary Magdalene, Saint
Biographical note
Mary Magdalene is mentioned in the gospels as one of the most devoted followers of Jesus, witness to both his crucifixion and his resurrection. Chiefly under the influence of Gregory the Great's writings, the Western liturgies have identified her with both the unnamed sinner (Luke 7:36) and Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus (Luke 10:39), but this identification is challenged by Eastern tradition, the writings of the Eastern Fathers, and much modern scholarship.
