Biographical note

Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini was born in Lombardy in 1897 to Giorgio Montini and Giudetta Alghisi. He entered seminary in 1916 and was ordained in 1920. He recieved a doctorate in canon law that same year. He later studied at the Gregorian University, the University of Rome La Sapeinza, and the Pontifical Academy of Ecclesiastical Nobles. In 1922, he entered the Secretariat of State, where he worked under Giuseppe Pizzardo. He served in the office of the papal nuncio to Poland in 1923, and spent most of his career in the Roman Curia, holding a variety of posts. In 1954, he was appointed as Archbishop of Milan, which also made him secretary of the Italian Bishops Conference. He was raised to cardinal in 1958, and elected pope in 1963, taking the name Paul VI. As pope, he continued the Second Vatican Council and brought it to completion. Paul VI died on August 6, 1978, of a series of heart attacks and related health issues. He was beatified in 2014 and canonized in 2018.
