Shinn, Everett, 1876-1953
Biographical Note
Twentieth-century American illustrator and painter. Everett Shinn (1876-1953) was born on November 6, 1876 in Woodstown, New Jerswy. He studied mechalincal drawing at teh Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia and fine arts at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He started his career as a newspaper illustrator in Philadelphia, working for newspapers until 1899, when he shifted to magazine illustration. He also created artworks in pastel, and to a lesser degree, paintings. He was a dedicated realist, part of a group of artists known as "the Eight" who were founders of what became known as the Ashcan School. He married four times: Florence Scovel (from 1898-1912), Corinne Baldwin (with whom he had two children, Janet and David, from 1913-circa 1920), Gertrude Putnam Chase (from 1924-1932) and Paula Downing (from 1933-1942). Shinn died of lung cancer in 1953.

Gertrude Chase family collection of Everett Shinn
Collection documents the personal and artistic life of American twentieth-century painter Everett Shinn through his love letters to his third wife, Gertrude Chase, and the Chase family's management of their Shinn paintings following the divorce in 1932. Materials include correspondence, exhibit programs, and newspaper clippings. Shinn's letters to Chase also include illustrations and poems he composed for her.
