Biographical note
Stanislaus Szczepanovsky was born near Krakow and educated at Gniezno and Paris. In 1072, he was raised to the see of Krakow. He excommunicated King Boleslaus the Cruel, who in consequence slew Stanislaus with his own hand while he was celebrating Mass. Pope Gregory VII laid Poland under an interdict and Boleslaus fled the country and died a fugitive in Hungary. Stanislaus was canonized in 1253.
