Biographical note

One of a group of maidens martyred at Cologne, probably under Diocletian. In the fourth century, a church was built at Cologne in their honor. Medieval legends greatly embellished the scanty historical facts. The number of, probably, eleven (XI MM VV, i.e., eleven martyr-virgins) was increased to eleven thousand (XIM VV, i.e. XI Millia Virginum--11,000 virgins) and a convenient legendary setting was found for the increased number.
