Biographical note

A native of Valencia, Spain, at an early age he entered the Dominican Order and soon became the adviser of the king of Aragon and of the Avignon pope. To heal the schism of the papacy, he travelled through Spain, France, Switzerland and Italy, preaching penance, working miracles and converting thousands. When it became clear to him that the Avignon party were not in the right, he turned his efforts towards bringing them into obedience to the Roman pope. He died at Vannes in Brittany.
