Biographical Note

French Jesuit. Born in Toulon, France, Amiot entered the Society of Jesus in 1737. He left France for the Jesuit mission in China in 1749, remaining there until his death in 1793. His translation of Sun Tzu's The Art of War was the first rendition of the work into a Western language.
