Biographical Note
Emma Sylvia Duffin (1883–1979), nurse, diarist, artist, and welfare worker, was born 8 November 1883 in Belfast to Adam and Maria (Drennan) Duffin. She studied at Cheltenham Ladies' College and took art classes at Belfast Art College. Duffin illustrated children's books and books of verse written by two of her sisters, Celia and Ruth. She also created works for Dublin's Cuala Press. During World War I, she served as a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse (VAD) in Egypt and France. After her return to Ireland in 1919, she became member and secretary of the Belfast Council of Social Welfare. For the Council, she initiated the Belfast hospitals' aftercare committee, lobbied for public housing in the 1930s, and represented the Council of Social Welfare on the Women's Advisory Housing Council of Northern Ireland (chairman, 1943–1947). At the outbreak of World War II, she re-enlisted with the Volutary Aid Detachement and was appointed VAD commandant of the Stranmillis Military Hospital, andclater of the Donegall Road Military Hospital. Emma Duffin died 31 January 1979.
