Biographical Note

Elizabeth Joyce Rivers (5 August 1903 – 20 July 1964) was an English painter, engraver, illustrator and author who lived in Ireland for most of her life. She was born in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England on 5 August 1903. She studied at Goldsmith's College, the Royal Academy Schools, and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. She lived on Inishmore, in the Aran Islands from 1936-1943, where she published her first book. Cuala Press published her subsequent book, Stranger in Aran in 1946, and she designed prints for the Press as well. She exhibited her art at the Royal Hibernian Academy and Waddington Galleries, and collaborated with Dublin artist Evie Hone on stained glass designs. Elizabeth Rivers died on 20 July 1964 in Dalkey, County Dublin.
