Pamela Colman Smith (16 February 1878 – 16 September 1951), English artist, illustrator, writer, publisher, and occultist, was born in London on 16 February 1878 to Americans Charles Edward Smith and Corinne Colman. She grew up in Manchester (England), Kingston (Jamaica), and New York (New York). She studied at the Pratt Institute and began to work as an illustrator in New York before returning to England. She illustrated works for Jack and W.B. Yeats, as well as posters for the Suffrage Atelier and the Red Cross. In 1902 Jack Butler Yeats and Pamela Colman Smith co-edited ‘A Broadsheet’, published by Elkin Mathews. In 1903 she published her own magazine, The Green Sheaf, for a year, and then replaced it with a press by the same name. In 1907 she was the first non-photographer to have a show at Alfred Steiglitz's Gallery 291. Smith was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and in 1909 she illustrated the Waite-Smith tarot deck.
